BOZAR, 1 century anniversary
It is 1922, the end of the First World War, and Brussels is undergoing major post-war reconstruction and renovation.
The Royal Family, members of the government and the Mayor of Brussels Adolphe Max, as well as a financier and musician of the time, Henry Le Boeuf, reached a consensus to carry out an ambitious project designed to make art in all its forms shine.
A project that looked to the future, that was constantly in search of evolution, an innovative building, organised to attend concerts in the best conditions, to exhibit works, to host conferences, to house the artistic society as a whole and to build this building with the aim of connecting the upper and lower parts of the city... the project was entrusted to the architect Victor Horta, who was asked to build a palace, a palace that was to become the home of all artists, of all disciplines, a real new concept at the time.
Horta was forced to play with the constraints of a sloping, sandy and damp site, the constraint also coming from the fact that the building could not hide the view from the Royal Palace over the palace square towards the lower part of the city.
Horta therefore had to reduce its height and in order not to lose space, sink it deeper into the ground!
A century separates us from the first stone, a century of artistic creations, BOZAR is today a living temple dedicated to art, a magnificent building and a formidable team at the service of the Brussels, Belgian and international artistic community.
To celebrate this exceptional anniversary, BOZAR has decided to take the necessary time. For six years, a programme has been planned by the teams of the Centre for Fine Arts to continue to evolve together towards a society that understands the crucial importance of artists in order to live better and be happier. We wish BOZAR, on behalf of our readers and our LB community, a very happy anniversary and at least another century to continue to make us laugh, cry, tremble and love music and the arts.
