Press trip to the Little California
The Vendée department in France is renowned for its stunning coastlines, charming towns, and vibrant culture.
Among its many treasures are La Tranche-sur-Mer and Les Sables d’Olonne, two coastal destinations that offer unique experiences for both residents and visitors.
Let’s explore their captivating allure !
La Tranche-sur-Mer: The Little California.
Nestled in the heart of the Vendée region, La Tranche-sur-Mer is more than just a traditional seaside resort; it’s an oasis of peace for families and nature lovers alike.
Often referred to as the "Little California" for its exceptional sunshine and beautiful sandy beaches stretching over 14.7 kilometers, this charming commune has managed to maintain an authentic and friendly atmosphere far from the concrete façades of modern tourist spots.
We can easily go from point A to point B by bike ( recommending here Le circuit de Carvor), but also by car.
Of course, a nice nature walk is always a good idea, where “ La casse aux lièvres” remains one of the most popular in the area.
During the summer months, La Tranche-sur-Mer transforms into a lively hub as tourists come to visit the region. The town pulses with life, featuring free concerts in the streets, bustling restaurant terraces, and an array of water sports (such as surfing) that invite both beginners and enthusiasts to join in the fun.
The vibrancy of summer activities is balanced by the laid-back charm of the community, making it an ideal spot for family vacations.
In contrast, the spring, autumn, and winter seasons offer a more intimate side of La Tranche-sur-Mer.
The serene landscape, coupled with mild weather, creates perfect conditions for peaceful walks along the coast or through the surrounding nature.
Visitors can enjoy the stillness, taking in the stunning coastal views and exploring the extensive natural reserves that highlight the region’s beauty.
Les Sables d’Olonne: The Sailing Capital.
Just a short drive from La Tranche-sur-Mer lies Les Sables d’Olonne, a city synonymous with sailing and marine adventures.
Known as the starting point of the legendary Vendée Globe, an around-the-world yacht race, this balmy seaside resort is a sailor's paradise offering more than just stunning beaches. Here, Ecole Vertime Wingfoil offers top-notch initiation courses, where expert instructors guide you in mastering the art of gliding over the water.
Whether you’re after excitement or a tranquil escape, wingfoiling here promises both thrills and stunning seaside views.
A Sailing Heritage.
Les Sables d’Olonne is not only famous for its beautiful sandy beach but also for its significant role in the world of competitive sailing.
The city boasts picturesque landscapes, including dunes, wetlands, and the lush forest of Olonne, which makes it a perfect backdrop for nautical events.
The Vendée Globe, arguably the most prestigious solo sailing race globally, highlights the city's status as a pivotal location for sailing enthusiasts. The last race started this November 10, 2024, giving as always an exciting spectacle for locals and visitors alike.
The Enchantment of Île Penotte.
In the heart of Les Sables d’Olonne, you’ll find the enchanting Île Penotte, a pedestrian-friendly neighborhood adorned with narrow streets and vibrant hollyhocks. This quaint area is famous for its stunning seashell-decorated houses, created by a local artist affectionately known as "the lady with the shells."
A stroll through this open-air museum is a delightful experience, offering a glimpse into the creative spirit that has revitalised this charming district.
The Chaume neighborhood.
Have you ever discovered this charming area known for its quaint streets and vibrant maritime atmosphere? Nestled along the coastline, The Chaume neighborhood boasts traditional Vendéen houses painted in bright colors, creating a picturesque setting.
The lively fishing port and bustling markets reflect the local culture, while the scenic coastal paths offer breathtaking views of the Atlantic. A visit to Chaume immerses you in the region's rich heritage, making it a delightful spot to explore local cuisine and enjoy the relaxed pace of seaside life.
For those who like outdoor activities, a ride on an e-scooter would be a nice option to go sightseeing and enjoying the wild coastlines, forest air and swamp sceneries in the area. Our tour was planned with Libert-etrott.
Damona Lodges.
During my visit to the region, I discovered a truly unique experience nestled in the heart of nature in Vendée. Waking up in one of the charming lodges at Damona Lodges was a feast for the senses. The rustic and bohemian atmosphere instantly made me feel at home as I stepped outside to breathe in the fresh air. Just a few kilometers from the stunning Vendée beaches, this haven allowed me to reconnect with nature while enjoying exceptional accommodations.
The outdoor jacuzzi ( in option ), is a perfect way to really enjoy a nice sunset and simply relax. My stay at Damona Lodges was nothing short of magical—a perfect blend of comfort and tranquility.
